A 35-year-old CNG-run auto-rickshaw owner was hacked to death allegedly over previous enmity in the capital’s Gendaria area early Sunday, police said.

The deceased was identified as Ariful Islam Babu, son of late Sekendar Ali of Balurchar in Jajira upazila of Shariatpur district.

He had been living as a tenant at Shah Almamia’s house in Mollapara, Mirhajirbagh in the city.

According to police and family sources, the incident occurred at around 5:30am near the railway line under the Koloswala House in Dayaganj area.

A group of 4–5 local men, including Robin, Shahin, Masud, and Kader, allegedly attacked Babu with sharp weapons, hacking him in the head, arms, and legs. The attackers also took away his mobile phone before fleeing the scene, said Aisha, wife of the victim.

His wife rescued him in a critical condition and took him to a nearby clinic. He was later shifted to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 7:55am.

Confirming the incident, Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
