A 20-year-old college student was killed and three members of her family were injured in a sharp-weapon attack allegedly carried out by a man over an unpaid loan in the capital’s Jatrabari area early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Diya Akter, a student of Borhanuddin College and daughter of Nurullah.
The injured are Moushumi, 35, wife of Nurullah, and their two children — Muaz, 15, and Joya, 12.
The incident took place at a house in the Bhanga Press area of Kazla around 5:00 am, according to family members.
Billal Hossain, a relative of the victims, said Musa, a contractor, had lent money to Nurullah, and the two had long been at odds over the unpaid debt.
Around dawn, Musa allegedly entered Nurullah’s house and got into an altercation with the family over the issue.
At one stage, Nurullah reportedly struck Musa with a sharp weapon, leaving him injured.
Enraged, Musa then allegedly attacked Moushumi with a sharp weapon, severing one of her wrists, Billal said.
As Diya and two other family members rushed to save Moushumi, Musa also attacked them, leaving all three injured.
The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Diya dead.
Musa was also taken to the same hospital under police custody.
