Convicted robber dies in Munshiganj ‘shootout’

A convicted robber was killed in a reported shootout with police in Munshiganj in the early hours of Saturday.

He was Mohammad Tajel, 36, son of Din Islam Khorshed, convicted to seven years' jail in a robbery case and also an accused in 10 other cases.

According to Md Yunus Ali, officer-in-charge of Sreenagar Police Station, police arrested Tajel from Monirampur upazila in Jashore on Friday at 10:30 am.

Acting on his information, a team of police launched a drive at Madankhali to recover firearms.

At around 1:15 am, the team reached Paschim Baroikhali in Sreenagar upazila, his associates attacked police and Tajel got shot when he tried to flee.

Police recovered Tajel’s bullet-riddled body after the shootout and also found a pistol, three bullets, shell casings and 100 yaba pills at the scene, UNB reported.

Three policemen were reportedly injured in the skirmish.
