The High Court ordered on Monday the relevant government bodies to demolish all illegal brick kilns across the country within four weeks.
All Divisional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners (DCs) have been instructed to comply with this directive and submit compliance reports to the High Court on March 17 of this year.
The order was passed by the High Court bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury after hearing a petition filed by a rights body, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB).
The HC bench stated that all illegal brick kilns operating without licenses, which contribute to environmental pollution, must be demolished or evicted following legal procedures.
Expressing serious concern over environmental pollution, the High Court also noted that the administration had failed to shut down all illegal brick kilns and protect the environment.
The court summoned the Director General of the Department of Environment and the Divisional Commissioners of Barisal, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Mymensingh to appear before it on March 17 for allegedly failing to comply with its directives.
Earlier in the day, the Divisional Commissioners of Dhaka, Chattogram, and Khulna, the Deputy Commissioners of Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, and Kurigram districts, and the Upazila Nirbahi Officers of Dhaka's Savar and Dhamrai upazilas appeared before the HC bench in compliance with its January 29 order.
