A court has sentenced a father and two other members of his family to death for the murder of his daughter in an attempt to frame a rival in a land dispute in Kishoreganj’s Karimganj Upazila.
The court also fined each of the convicts Tk 50,000.
A fourth suspect, Nazmunnahar, was acquitted.
Judge Muhammad Nurul Amin Biplob of the Kishoreganj Senior District and Sessions Court delivered the verdict in the case on Wednesday.
The death row convicts were identified as Anowarul Islam Angur, who hailed from Bhatia Zahirkona village in the Upazila, his brother Khurshid Mia, and his nephew Sadek Mia.
They were not in court to hear the verdict.
The court delivered the verdict after a long trial and extensive witness testimony, said Advocate Md Jalal Uddin, the public prosecutor for the district judge’s court.
He said the suspects had absconded after they were released on bail.
The case documents say that Angur had a land dispute with several local residents, including a man named Abu Bakr Siddique. In an attempt to frame his rivals, Angur, his brother, and his nephew stabbed his daughter Mira Akhter Asma to death on Aug 10, 2016, and dumped her body in the jungle behind his house.
On Aug 11, the day after the murder, Angur filed a murder case at Karimganj Police Station accusing Abu Bakr and 15 others over his daughter’s death. But, during the investigation, police found that Angur and several others were involved in the murder. They then filed a final investigation report on Sept 3, 2017, to the court, declaring that the named suspects were innocent.
That day, Sub Inspector Alok Kumar Dutta of Karimganj Police Station filed a case against Angur, Khurshid, Sadek, and Angur’s wife Nazmunnahar over the murder of Mira. Police completed their investigation and submitted a chargesheet against the four suspects on Feb 8, 2018.
Advocate Jesmin Ara Begum Rozy represented the defendants during the trial.
