Police arrested five people in a case filed over the gang rape of a 21-year-old woman in Fulbari upazila of Kurigram on Thursday.
The arrestees were identified as Moinul Haque, Yakub Ali, Hasanur Rahman (20), Sohel Rana (21), and Lal Mia (40). Two other suspects, Atiar Rahman (35) and Al Amin (20), remain at large, said Fulbari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mamunur Rashid.
According to police sources, the victim had an extramarital affair with one of the accused, Moinul Haque (23). On Tuesday, she went to meet Moinul at a eucalyptus grove, unaware that he had conspired with his associate Yakub Ali and five others to assault her. Upon her arrival, seven men allegedly raped her.
Following the incident, the victim filed a complaint at Fulbari Police Station on Wednesday. Later, police launched an operation and arrested the five suspects in the early hours of Thursday.
Suspects have confessed to the crime during primary interrogation.
A case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, and efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining accused.
The arrested individuals have been sent to jail, and arrangements have been made for the victim’s medical examination, the OC said.
