Four accused were arrested with firearms over the brutal killing of a businessman outside Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka, allegedly over a dispute tied to illegal wire trading.
The arrestees are Mahmudul Hasan Mohin (41) and Tarek Rahman Robin (22), DMP Media and Public Relations Department Deputy Police Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman told the FE on Friday.
Acting on CCTV footage from the crime scene and conducting raids across various parts of the city, police arrested the two suspects in the incident, he added.
During the arrest, police recovered a foreign-made pistol from Tarek Rahman Robin’s possession.
A group of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two other suspects. However, the identities of the two arrestees could not be known immediately, according to Talebur Rahman.
Following the incident, the victim’s elder sister filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station, he added.
Initial investigation suggests that the killing stemmed from business rivalry and prior enmity. Police operations are ongoing to determine the exact motive and to apprehend other individuals involved.
Legal proceedings against the arrested suspects are underway.
Earlier, assailants had beaten and hacked a trader to death in brutal fashion on Wednesday.
The victim, Md Sohag, 32, ran a scrap copper and wire business in Mitford.
He was originally from Barishal.
The attack took place near Gate No. 3 of the hospital around 6:00 pm on Wednesday, Kotwali Police chief Md Moniruzzaman said.
Sohag was critically injured in a clash between two groups and rushed to the hospital’s emergency department, where doctors declared him dead on arrival, the officer said.
“A rivalry over local dominance and control of the illicit wire market led to the attack,” said the officer.
