A gang of robbers has reportedly looted gold jewellery and cash worth millions of taka from seven shops, including six jewellery stores, at a market in Madaripur Sadar.
The organised gang also tied up and assaulted a witness during the heist at Houseidi Bazar in the Dudhkhali Union.
Madaripur Sadar Model Police chief Abul Kalam Azad said the robbery took place at the goldsmiths’ alley of the market in the early hours of Saturday, bdnews24.com reports.
According to police and local business owners, a masked group first broke into New Priyanka Jewellers by cutting open the lock, taking cash and ornaments before moving through the market.
During the raid, Milon Molla, a mason working a night shift nearby, saw the incident unfold and was caught by the gang, who tied him up and beat him before continuing the robbery.
The gang then targeted five more jewellery shops and a grocery store, breaking open safes and cash boxes and taking gold, silver ornaments and money.
The affected shops are Shree Shree Jagdish Thakur Jewellers, New Narayan Jewellers, Bhagyashree Jewellers, New Priyanka Jewellers, New Konika Jewellers, Maa Laxmi Jewellers and the grocery shop Zia Store.
Bhagyashree Jewellers owner Sentu Mal said about 30 bhori (around 349g) of gold, 500 bhori (around 5.8kg) of silver, and around Tk 100,000 in cash were taken.
“I have lost everything. I do not know how I will recover from this,” he added.
New Priyanka Jewellers owner Parimal Mal said his shop lost around 2.5 bhori (about 29g) of gold, 1 kg of silver ornaments and Tk 95,000 in cash.
He added that the total losses across the six jewellery shops could be worth at least Tk 30 million.
Officer Azad said a police team was dispatched to the scene immediately after receiving news of the robbery.
He noted that the matter is under high-priority investigation, with legal steps to follow.
