An alleged drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Uttar Bijoypur in Cumilla Sadar South upazila early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Bappy alias Rajib, 26, son of late Delwar Hossain Delu of Uttar Rampur village in the upazila, reports UNB.

Police said a team of Sadar South Model Police Station conducted a drive at Bijoypur around 2:30am to recover drugs.

Sensing presence of law enforcers, Bappy and his associates opened fire on them forcing them to retaliate in self-defence which triggered a gun battle, said Inspector (Investigation) of the police station Kamal Krishna Dhar.

Bullet-hit Bappy was found lying on the ground after the gunfight and he was taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, he said.

Three policemen were also injured in the incident, Kamal said, adding that two sharp weapons and 12 Yaba tablets were recovered from the spot.

He also said Bappy was wanted in 11 drug cases.
