The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) in Dhaka on Sunday took into its cognisance the formal charge, brought against five former police officials in a case filed over alleged crimes against humanity, committed in the city's Rampura area during the 2024 uprising.
The accused were former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman, former additional deputy commissioner Rashedul Islam, former officer-in-charge (OC) of Rampura Police Station Mashiur Rahman and its former sub-inspector (SI) Tarikul Islam Bhuiyan, and former assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Rampura police check-post Chanchal Chandra Sarkar.
The tribunal at the same time issued a fresh arrest warrant against four absconding accused in the case, including the former DMP commissioner.
The three-member bench of the ICT-1, headed by its Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the order, after holding a primary hearing on the charge brought against the accused.
The tribunal set August 17 for holding further proceedings in the case. It also asked the respondents to submit a report regarding the absconding accused as well as to produce the arrested accused Chanchal on that day.
Prosecutor Gazi M H Tamim represented the prosecution during the hearing. On August 7, the prosecution submitted formal charges at the ICT against the five former police officials.
As per documents, six-year-old Basit Khan Musa was shot and critically injured during police action on July 19 last year. The same bullet fatally struck his grandmother, Maya Islam, after passing through the child's body. Musa survived after treatment, but his grandmother died. Another victim, Md Nadim, was also shot dead during the same incident.
In a separate incident on that day, a video went viral on social media showing a young man, later identified as 18-year-old Amir Hossain, hanging from the ledge of an under-construction building.
The video appeared to show two policemen shooting at him at close range while he clung at the cornice of the building and was desperately trying to save himself.
