A two-month-old infant has been abducted from Thakurgaon General Hospital, prompting the family members and an outraged crowd to stage a protest by blocking the road in front of the hospital.
The infant was abducted on Monday evening. The family’s protest blocked the road around 9pm.
The blockade demanding the child’s rescue lasted for approximately half an hour. After the incident was reported, the police and army arrived at the location to de-escalate the situation.
According to hospital authorities, Shimul and Hashi Begum, residents of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila's Munshirhat area, brought their child to the hospital's children's ward on Sunday morning due to respiratory problems.
The pair encountered an unknown woman in the hospital. On Monday evening, the woman stole Shayan, the two-month-old child, from the hospital's children's ward.
The child's father Shimul says, "The mystery woman had been talking to us since Monday morning. Before Iftar, my wife and mother-in-law went to the toilet and left our two-month-old child behind. They returned, but could not find him, so they began searching."
Rakibul Alam Chayan, resident medical officer at Thakurgaon General Hospital, said that the administration was notified as soon as they learnt of the child's abduction from the hospital's children's ward. Efforts are underway to rescue the abducted infant by reviewing the hospital's CCTV footage. Legal action will be taken in response to this occurrence.
According to Shahidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Thakurgaon Sadar Police Station, the police went to the hospital immediately after receiving the news and spoke to the child's family. They have also collected CCTV footage from the hospital.
“The footage shows a woman wearing a black burqa taking the child away. We are trying our best to rescue the abducted child.”
Khairul Islam, Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila executive officer, said: “The woman in the burqa secretly took the infant from the hospital after preying on his family's gullibility.”
