A suspect in a murder case has allegedly escaped from Brahmanbaria District Jail using the bail papers of another inmate and committing “identity fraud”.
A case has been filed against the absconding suspect and several other inmates, while six prison guards have been temporarily suspended over negligence of duty, reports bdnews24.com.
Jailer Manzurul Islam filed the case with Sadar Model Police Station on Thursday, said Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station chief (OC) Md Shahidul Islam.
The escaped inmate, Hridoy, is accused in a murder case filed with Akhaura Police Station and is a resident of Kasba Upazila.
According to the case dossier, bail documents for inmate No. 2, Didar Hossain, reached the jail around 11:52 am on Thursday, starting his release process.
It is alleged that at the time, inmate No. 1, Hridoy, posed as Didar Hossain and the photograph attached to the case history ticket was removed accordingly. Several other inmates reportedly vouched for his identity as Didar.
Based on the documents and the inmates’ words, the on-duty prison guards released Hridoy instead of Didar, the documents said.
However, shortly after the release, an argument among the inmates raised suspicion. Upon questioning, several inmates allegedly admitted that they had assisted the escape through collusion and deception, according to the plaintiff of the case.
Those named as accused in the case include absconding inmate Hridoy, 28, Didar Hossain, 28, of Krishnanagar in Nabinagar Upazila; inmate Billal Mia, 22, of Nandura Purkpara in the same Upazila; convicted prisoner Md Palash Hossain, 25, of Paghachang in Sadar Upazila; convicted prisoner Akhtar Hossain Choton, 30, of Konnabari in Kasba; inmate Shipon Mia, 45, of Sultanpur in Moglabazar, Sylhet; and inmate Monir Hossain, 55, of Sonargaon in Kasba.
Five to seven unidentified people were also named in the case.
Chattogram Range Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Md Chhagir Mia said: “An accused named Hridoy escaped from jail by fraudulently using another inmate’s bail documents. Six prison guards have been temporarily suspended for negligence of duty over the incident.”
The suspended guards are Md Morshed Alam, Md Hanif assigned to the main gate, Md Sahab Uddin of the release section, admission section in-charge Rabiul Alam, the prison internal intelligence section’s Md Zahid Hasan, and the ICT section’s Md Abu Khayer.
