A man has been sentenced to death for murdering a 14-year-old boy in Kushtia.

Kushtia’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman gave the verdict in the five-year-old case on Thursday.

Babul Hossain was murdered in Kumarkhali over a land dispute, said state counsel Akram Hossain Dulal.

Khairul Islam was handed the death penalty for his murder. The court also ordered him to pay Tk 100,000 as fine. Md Jiku, Khairul’s cousin, has been sentenced to prison for a year.

The court ordered three-year jail terms for Khairul’s father Omed Pramanik, brother Faruk Hossain and his uncle Asan Pramanik.

Abul Kashem, Osel Pramanik, Atiar Rahman, Rabiul Islam, and Jahangir Hossain were also sentenced to three years in prison.

All the convicts were present in the dock when the verdict was announced, said prosecutor Dulal.

Khairul’s family was in a land dispute with Babul's father Palash Uddin at Kumarkhali’s Komorkandi village, according to the case detail.

On Oct 5 of 2014, the men attacked Palash in his home and hacked him using sharp weapons. Babul was stabbed multiple times when he tried to help his father, reports bdnews24.

The teenager was later confirmed dead at the Kushtia General Hospital. Palash then filed a case at Kumarkhali Police Station.

The trial began after the police submitted the case’s charge sheet on May 15, 2015.
