Man arrested on charges of beating 'thief' to death in Hatiya

Police have arrested one of three suspects accused of beating a man to death on suspicion of theft in Noakhali's Hatiya Upazila.

Mostafizur Rahman, 28, who was injured in the incident, filed the case on Saturday, Hatiya Police Station chief AKM Azmal Huda said.

The attack took place on Thursday night in Char Hare Asad Nagar of Jahajmara Union.

The victim, Lokman Hossain, 35, was the son of Abul Kashem from Sherpur and worked for a contractor of the Power Development Board (PDB).

Police said the arrested suspect, Tarek Aziz, 35, is an electrician from Char hare village. The other two suspects are Md Sharif and Nargis Akter.

According to the case, Lokman and Mostafizur had gone to scrap dealer Babul’s shop in Asad Nagar on Thursday evening to sell 160kg of leftover material after completing electricity supply line work. Tarek and two others tied them up, claiming the materials were stolen. Tarek then struck Lokman’s right arm and back with an iron rod.

Around 200 people gathered before police rescued the two. Lokman collapsed shortly afterwards and died at the scene despite being freed.

His body was handed over to the family after postmortem. Police said efforts are under way to arrest the remaining suspects.
