A Dhaka court has ordered a businessman to be questioned for five days in a case filed by a police officer on charges of rape and fraud.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam issued the order on Tuesday, and Prosecution Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Tahmina Akhter gave information about the remand.

A female sergeant filed a case at Lalbagh Police Station on Feb 5, accusing land trader Zahidul Islam Zahid Khan of “soliciting sexual relationship with promises of marriage” and embezzlement.

On Feb 18, investigation officer SI Abdur Razzak Khan sought a seven-day remand, and the court set Tuesday for the hearing.

The suspect was produced in court, where his lawyer Shakib Ahmed applied for bail and cancellation of the remand.

According to the case dossier, they met on Nov 5 last year through the “Matrimony” app. After that, the two families discussed marriage, and they have met multiple times since then.

The plaintiff alleges that the defendant used to visit her Lalbagh residence. He raped her at different times under the pretext of marriage, and embezzled Tk 1.57 million.
