Police arrested 20 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, from Laldighi Maidan area in Chittagong on Saturday morning.
Tipped-off that some Shibir men gathered in the area to carry out acts of sabotage at the Shaheed Minar, police launched a drive there and arrested them around 8:30 am, said Md Jasim Uddin, officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station.
The law enforcers were interrogating the Shibir leaders and activists, reports a local news agency.
Denying the allegation, Chittagong city (North) Shibir leader Nurul Amin said police detained their leaders and activists while they were preparing to bring out a procession marking the Victory Day as part of their countrywide programme.
He also demanded immediate release of the arrestees.
