Police have requested a 10-day remand to interrogate actor Siddiqur Rahman in custody over the killing of a furniture store employee during last year’s July Uprising.
The petition, submitted on August 24, alleges that Siddiqur, identified as the 223rd suspect in the case, was present outside Suvastu Nazar Valley in Shahjadpur during the protests and played a leading role in orchestrating the violence, bdnews24.com reports.
According to the police filing, Siddiqur “skilfully provided financial support” that fuelled the incident, which aimed to suppress the student-led uprising.
The petition argues that his remand is essential to:
1. Carry out a proper investigation;
2. Conduct operations to arrest absconding suspects in the case;
3. Gather intelligence on financiers and planners of the attack;
4. Identify and detain those who led the violence; and
5. Recover weapons used in the incident.
The hearing on the application will be held on Wednesday at Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Siddiqur’s presence, according to prosecution police Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain.
On July 19, 2024, during the height of the anti-government movement, Parvez Bepari, a furniture shop employee, joined protests with friends outside Suvastu Nazar Valley after Friday prayers. He was shot and injured by bullets allegedly fired by the accused. Parvez was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
His father, Md Sabuj, later filed a murder case at Gulshan Police Station.
Siddiqur was first detained on April 29, when youths caught him in Dhaka's Bailey Road, beat him, and handed him to Ramna Model Police Station.
He was then transferred to Gulshan Police Station, where he was placed under arrest in a case related to the attempted murder of van driver Jabbar Ali Hawlader during the July Uprising.
A Dhaka court subsequently placed him on a seven-day police remand for questioning. He was sent to jail on May 7 after questioning, but on August 20, he was formally arrested in the Parvez murder case, prompting investigators to file the latest remand petition.
