Police have recovered the body of a woman, who was four months pregnant, from a pond in Muksudpur upazila of Gopalganj six days after she went missing.

The body, stuffed inside a sack, was found around 8:00 pm on Sunday in a pond adjacent to her in-laws’ house in Latifpur village, said Mostafa Kamal, officer-in-charge of Muksudpur Police Station.

The deceased was identified as Eti Begum, 21, who hailed from Sharishabari upazila in Jamalpur. She married Rashel Sheikh of Latifpur three years ago.

Police said Rashel and his family members have been absconding since the body was recovered.

Locals said the couple had been having frequent quarrels. Eti went missing from the house on November 24. Three days later, on November 27, Rashel filed a general diary with the local police station.

Yesterday, her body was found floating in the pond wrapped in a sack, reports a news agency.

OC Mostafa said, “Her hands, legs and mouth were tied with cloth. Primarily, we suspect it to be a premeditated murder.”

He added that Eti was four months pregnant at the time of her death. Before the recovery of the body, Rashel and his family locked their house and fled, said the OC.

The body was sent to Gopalganj General Hospital for autopsy, the OC added.
