The High Court on Tuesday commuted the sentences of 10 convicts in a case filed over the bomb attack at Ramna Batamul that left 10 people dead in 2001.
The HC bench of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasrin Akhter handed down the judgement, reports UNB.
The court sentenced Maulana Tajuddin to life term imprisonment commuting his death penalty while upheld the life imprisonment of Shahadat Ullah Jewel.
The HC also abated the appeal petitions of three convicts as they died during the trial proceedings.
Earlier on May 8, the High Court fixed May 13 for delivering judgment in the case.
On April 14, 2001, nine people were killed on the spot in a bomb attack during the Chhayanat’s Bengali New Year celebrations at Ramna Batamul, Another victim died at the hospital later.
Two cases – one for murder and another for possessing explosives—were filed with Ramna Police Station.
On June 23, 2014, a Dhaka court sentenced eight people including Mufti Hannan, the top leader of Harkatul Jihad (Huji), to death and seven others to life imprisonment in the murder case.
The other death-row convicts were Akbar Hossain, Arif Hassan, Md Tajuddin, Hafez Jahangir Alam Badar, Abu Bakar alias Hafez Selim Hawladar, Abdul Hye and Shafiqur Rahman.
However, Mufti Hannan was hanged on April 12, 2017 in a case over grenade attack in Sylhet.
Those who got life imprisonment were Shahadatullah Jewel, Sabbir, Sheikh Farid, Abdur Rauf, Yeahia and Abu Taher.
The death references and appeals of the convicts were kept waiting for hearing at the High Court.
