The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Monday upheld a High Court verdict that acquitted BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and other accused from the charges of Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam passed the order after dismissing three leave-to-appeal petitions filed by the state and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against the High Court verdict.
The petitions came to the Cause List of the apex court on Monday for hearing. Cause Lists contain data of cases filed.
Upon a hearing, the apex court dismissed the petitions.
On November 27 last year, the High Court acquitted Khaleda Zia in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case. She was sentenced to seven years of rigorus imprisonment by a lower court in Dhaka on October 29, 2018 in that case.
Lawyers AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Bodruddoza Badal, Aminul Islam, Ruhul Quddus Kazal and others represented Khaleda Zia on Monday's court hearing.
Lawyer Ashif Hassan appeared for the ACC and Additional Attorney General Aneeq R Haque appeared for the state during the hearing.
ACC filed the case against Khaleda, Harris, Ziaul, and Monirul with Tejgaon Police Station on August 8, 2011.
On November 18, 2018, Khaleda Zia filed an appeal with the High Court challenging the lower court verdict and sought acquittal in the case.
