A schoolboy has been knifed to death in Hatirjheel’s Madhubagh in the capital while hanging out with friends on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The victim, 17-year-old Md Rabbi, was a 10th grader at Anjuman High School in Moghbazar.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Partha Sarathi Das of Hatirjheel Police Station said the incident occurred around 8pm at the Madhubagh ground.
Rabbi was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
According to Kazi Siam, one of the individuals who took Rabbi to the hospital, said the teenager had been chatting with friends in the field after Iftar.
"A group of local youths approached and surrounded him," he said. "Following a heated argument, they stabbed him in the chest and fled the scene."
Partha added that the attackers and the victim appeared to be from the same social circle.
"We have learnt that the stabbing took place during an altercation that escalated from a verbal dispute," he added.
Police believe the primary motive behind the killing was a "rivalry over a romantic affair”.
SI Ibrahim Khalil said that authorities are currently questioning the friends who were present at the scene, as well as those who brought Rabbi to the hospital, to identify the assailants.
"We are working to determine how many people were involved and to establish the identities of the attackers," he said. "Operations are under way to apprehend the suspects.”
