Shariatpur ‘gunfight’ leaves drug suspect dead

A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with detectives in Chhoygaon village of sadar upazila of Shariatpur early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Md Sumon Pahar, accused in 11 cases including drug and extortion.

Md Azhar Ali, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch of Shariatpur police, said a team led by him conducted a drive in the village around 2:30 am.

When the team reached there the gang hurled crude bombs and opened fire on them forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

After the gunfight, police rescued Sumon with bullet injuries, UNB reports.

Later, he was rushed to Sadar Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead, police said.

Police recovered 51 Yaba tablets, 1kg hemp, 6 crude bombs and a motorcycle from the spot.

Three policemen were also injured in the skirmish, said the OC.
