Rapid Action Battalion has said a woman in Shariatpur town was strangled to death for 6 tolas (around 70 grams) of gold ornaments and cash.

RAB said this on Saturday after arresting a suspect, Shahidul Islam Ripon Molla, 50, from Keraniganj, Dhaka, on Friday night -- three days after the murder.

Ripon, son of Sonai Molla of Damudya Upazila, confessed during primary interrogation, according to RAB-8 Madaripur Camp Company Commander Mir Monir Hossain.

At a media briefing, Monir said, Nazma Begum, 45, was murdered on Tuesday afternoon at her rented flat at Rupnagar of Shariatpur Municipality. Her brother, Deen Islam, started a murder case with Palong Police the following day.

He added that the incident drew wide attention after being reported in the media, prompting a shadow investigation by the RAB. Using digital surveillance, the team tracked and arrested Ripon in Keraniganj.

Quoting Ripon’s statement, the commander said: “Nazma Begum was killed out of greed for 6 tolas of gold and money. Gold ornaments and cash were recovered from him.”

RAB handed over the suspect to Palong Police for further legal proceedings.

Nazma, daughter of Sekendar Kazi of Kazi Kandi village in Naria Upazila, had been living with her 12-year-old son, Nirab Kazi, on the second floor of a four-storey building in Rupnagar after separating from her husband.
