Former e-CAB president and actress Shomi Kaiser has been released on bail in an attempted murder case linked to an attack on students during last year's anti-discrimination movement protests.
She walked out of Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail at 10:40 pm on Thursday after securing bail, prison official Md Jahangir Kabir said.
She was detained from her Uttara home on November 5 last year and later shown arrested in an attempted murder case tied to the July protests. After being denied bail by a lower court, she moved to the High Court, which granted her bail on March 12.
On April 9, a court ordered her arrest in another attempted murder case over an assault on a college student in Azampur. On Monday, the High Court granted her bail and disposed of an earlier rule.
She resigned as e-CAB president on August 14 following the fall of the government on August 5.
Daughter of martyred intellectual Shahidullah Kaiser and writer-politician Panna Kaiser, she rose to fame as a 1990s television actress before turning producer and joining the Awami League, where she served on its Liberation War subcommittee and as an FBCCI director.
She sought but did not win the party’s nomination for Feni-3 in the last election.
