Suspected drug pedlar dies in Cox’s Bazar ‘shootout’

A suspected drug pedlar was killed in a reported shootout with police in Cox’s Bazar in the early hours of Friday.

The dead was identified as Yusuf Bahadur, 32, son of Khalil Ahmed of Choto Habirpara in Teknaf upazila. Wanted in 12 cases, he was a listed drug pedlar.

Teknaf Police Station's officer-in-charge Pradip Kumar Das was quoted by UNB news agency as saying that they arrested Yusuf on Thursday night and went on a drive along with him to arrest his associates from Moulvipara area.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals, who had taken position in the area, opened fire on them, triggering a gunfight.

Meanwhile, Yusuf fell in the line of fire, was shot and died on the spot. His body was later sent to hospital for autopsy.

Five policemen were also injured during the skirmish. 

Police recovered 30,000 pieces of yaba tablets, ten firearms and 24 cartridges from the scene.
