Suspected robber dies in Shariatpur ‘shootout’ with police

A suspected ring leader of a robber gang was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Dasharta village in Shariatpur in the early hours of Wednesday.

The victim was Salauddin, 39, a resident of Gosairhat union of Gosairhat upazila and accused in six robbery cases.

Abdul Momen, superintendent of Shariatpur Police, said members of detective branch police arrested Salauddin from Kajirhat in Jajira upazila on Tuesday noon.

Based on Salauddin's interrogation, a police team from Palong Model Thana then conducted a drive in an orchard near a mosque of Dasharta village at around 1:30 am to track the remaining gang members.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the gang members engaged in shootout with police leaving Salauddin with bullet injuries. He was declared dead when taken to a hospital.

Four policemen were also injured in the skirmish, UNB reported.

One shooter gun, six crude bombs and sharp weapons were recovered from the spot.
