A leader in the Tanti Dal, a BNP-affiliated organisation of weavers, has been hacked to death at a tea stall in Khulna city.

The incident occurred around midnight on Saturday in the Nayabati area, according to Md Touhiduzzaman, chief of Khalishpur Police Station.

The dead, 38-year-old Sona Mia, is a local resident. He was the Tanti Dal convener for ward No. 10 in Khalishpur Thana, bdnews24.com reports.

Khalishpur Thana BNP President Sheikh Mohammad Ali Babu said that, in addition to his role in the Tanti Dal, Sona Mia had operated a tea stall in the area for a long time.

Police and witnesses say that Sona Mia was at his tea stall around midnight when four people riding on two motorcycles came and hacked at his stomach with sharp weapons.

Sona Mia tried to flee for his life, but fell to the ground a short distance from his store. When people nearby rushed to help him, the attackers fled.

Locals rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment, where the doctor on duty declared him dead, said officer Touhiduzzaman.

When the incident was reported, police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue for postmortem.

Sudarshan Kumar Roy, deputy commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police, said several police teams are working to arrest the perpetrators.
