Two people have died and two others suffered injuries after being shot by a rival group during a clash over the occupation of char lands at the Padma River’s confluence in Rajshahi’s Bagha Upazila.
Bagha Police Station Inspector Suprabhat Mandal said that the incident occurred on Monday while the victims were cutting fodder on the char land, reports bdnews24.com.
Rajshahi Medical College Hospital spokesman Shankar K Biswas confirmed that two people with bullet wounds are currently undergoing treatment in the surgery ward.
The deceased have been identified as Aman Mandal, 35, and Nazmul Mandal, 26.
The injured are Muntaj Mandal, 32, and Rabik Hossain, 18. All of them are residents of the Neech Khanpur village in the Upazila's char area.
Police and witnesses said that people working for Belal Hossain, Muntaj, and Lablu of Khanpur village were cutting fodder on land they held at the confluence of the Padma River, which borders Bagha Upazila, Natore’s Lalpur and Kushtia’s Daulatpur.
At that time, assailants from a gang known as “Kakon Bahini” of Daulatpur arrived with firearms and began firing indiscriminately at them.
Four people sustained bullet injuries during the clash between the two sides. When people from Bagha arrived at the scene upon receiving news, the rival group fled.
Police said that Aman and Nazmul were pronounced dead by the doctor after they were rushed to the hospital.
Nihar Chandra Mandal, a doctor at Bagha Upazila Health Complex, said that Muntaj had at least 100 bullet marks in parts on his body, Rabik 80, Nazmul 35, and Aman 5, including on his head.
Inspector Suprabhat said the post-mortem for the two victims will be conducted on Tuesday.
