Two more ‘child rape’ attempts reported in Chattogram

Police in Chattogram have detained two security guards over separate allegations of attempted rape of two children in different place of the port city.

The incidents reportedly occurred on Friday afternoon in Agrabad Hajipara under Double Mooring Police Station and Mandatila under Bayezid Bostami Police Station.

The allegations come a day after “vigilante violence” in Bakalia over the “rape” of another child amid a wave of similar sexual violence cases reported across the country.

The detainees have been identified as 45-year-old Md Ehsan and 40-year-old Md Hasan.

Both the children have been admitted to the one-stop crisis centre (OCC) at Chattogram Medical College Hospital, police said.

Double Mooring Police chief Jamal Uddin Khan said a 10-year-old girl was playing with another child at Jalal’s Colony when Ehsan allegedly lured her inside a boundary wall and “attempted to rape” her.

Local residents caught Ehsan and detained him.

Upon receiving a call via the national emergency hotline 999, a team of police arrived to take him into custody.

Similar to the Bakalia incident, colony residents initially resisted handing Ehsan over to the police, demanding that he remain in their custody.

Law enforcers managed to defuse the situation by reasoning with the crowd before transferring him to the police station.

Legal proceedings against Ehsan are currently under way.

In a separate development, Bayezid Bostami police arrested Hasan for allegedly “attempting to rape” a 5-year-old child in Mandatila.

"Hasan, who works as a security guard at a local colony, allegedly tried to assault the child on Friday afternoon," said Bayezid Bostami Police chief Abdul Karim.

Following complaints from locals, a police team quickly intervened, detained Hasan, and brought him to the station.

Police added that a case is being prepared over the incident.

These back-to-back incidents follow a night of fierce confrontations on Thursday in Chattogram's Bakalia.

A massive clash erupted when an angry mob tried to snatch Monir Hossain, a decorator shop employee accused of raping a 3-and-a-half-year-old girl, from police custody to deliver “vigilante justice”.

Protesters set fire to a police vehicle and threw stones, turning the Shah Amanat Bridge-Bahaddarhat road into a battlefield for hours.

At least 40 people, including journalists and police officers, were injured before police could eventually extract Monir late Thursday night.

Charges were brought against Monir by the victim's father.
