A newlywed woman is understood to have committed suicide by hanging herself in her new home in the capital's Banasree residential area on Friday night.

Afiya Murshida Chaity Alam, hailing from Ghatail upazila of Tangail, got married to Md Tawhid just three days earlier, according to her own younger brother. She was 37.

The brother, Omar Faruk, said Tawhid and Chaity got married with the consent of their families, just last week, but problems arose immediately afterwards.

Chaity then moved in with her husband, into a flat on the fourth floor of an apartment block in Banasree's E-block, Faruk said.

Tawhid’s family members, particularly his mother and sister, had been misbehaving with Chaity since the marriage, he alleged.

Her in-laws' 'mental torture' might have led Chaity to commit suicide, the brother claimed.

On Friday night, Tawhid called Faruk saying that Chaity had locked herself in a room and was not receiving calls.

Upon breaking the door open, Chaity was found hanging from the ceiling fan by a scarf, the brother said.

She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, only to be declared dead by the physicians at around 1:45 am (early Saturday), said the hospital’s police outpost in-charge Md Bachchu Miah.
