A young man has been stabbed to death during a clash between rival youth gangs in Khulna.

The victim, identified as 21-year-old Ishan, was attacked on Thursday evening near the Khalishpur Fair Clinic intersection, according to Khalishpur Police Station chief Mir Atahar Ali.

He died on the way to City Medical College Hospital. Another person was also injured in the incident, the latest in a long-running feud between two local teenage groups, according to authorities.

Police said tensions had been simmering for weeks between the two groups in the Petka Bazar neighbourhood, reports bdnews24.com.

An argument broke out again on Thursday evening, after which members of one group allegedly assaulted and stabbed Ishan before fleeing.

Local residents took him to hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries as he was being moved to another facility.

Atahar said a special team had been formed to investigate the killing.

“Information is being collected from different areas, and CCTV footage is being analysed to identify those involved,” he added.

Residents say law and order in Khulna has sharply deteriorated, with frequent clashes between rival groups, reports of gunfire after dark, and repeated displays of weapons on the streets.

Police figures show 45 murders have been recorded in Khulna city in the 15 months since Aug 5, 2024.

Khulna Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Rashidul Islam Khan said the killings included six in November, four in October, one in September, five in August, two in July, three in June, five in May, two in April, one in February and two in January.

A further 14 murders occurred between August and December 2024, alongside incidents of hacking, shootings and bomb attacks, according to him.

More than 50 people have been injured in attacks during this period, said Rashidul.
