A youth was shot dead and three others were injured in a gun attack allegedly over establishing supremacy in Nabinagar upazila of Brahmanbaria on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Shipon Mia, 30, son of Monnaf Mia of Nurjahanpur area in the upazila, reports UNB.
Locals said Shipon and another youth, Rifat, had been at odds for a long time over local dominance.
On Saturday evening, Shipon went to a hotel near the Gani Shah Shrine in the Borikandi area to have snacks. Sensing his presence, Rifat allegedly opened fire from outside the shop, leaving four people—including a hotel staff—injured by bullets.
The injured were initially taken to a local hospital and later shifted to Dhaka for better treatment.
On Sunday morning, Shipon’s brother-in-law Shakil Mia said they had rushed him to a hospital in Dhaka, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours due to excessive bleeding.
The remaining injured individuals are undergoing treatment in Dhaka, he added, noting that apart from the hotel staff, the other two were customers.
Following the incident, tension gripped the area, prompting police to deploy additional forces to avert further violence. Local shops and businesses remained closed out of fear of clashes.
Nabinagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shahinur Islam said police rushed to the spot soon after the incident, and the situation is now under control.
He said the shooting appeared to be linked to a feud over local supremacy, adding that no one had been detained yet in connection with the case.
