Chattogram on Friday faced a severe waterlogging and flooding situation due to heavy rainfall caused by the monsoon wind and low pressure over the Bay of Bengal.
The rainfall began on Thursday and persisted relentlessly until Friday afternoon, exacerbating the already-challenging situation.
Several areas in Chattogram have been affected, according to bdnews24.com and UNB reports. Some of the worst-affected areas mentioned in the reports include Muradpur, Bahaddarhat, Kapasgola, Badurtala, Chawkbazar, DC Road, Fultola, Baklia, Katalganj, Arakan Road, Halishahar, Chaktai-Khatunganj, Baklia Miyakhan Nagar, Masterpole, Chawkbazar, Sholshahar, Commerce College, Choto Pole and Boro Pole.
The heavy rainfall led to extensive waterlogging, impacting key roads, homes, shops and businesses in the city.
In places like Bahaddarhat, the water level rose to knee-deep or even waist-deep, causing difficulties for pedestrians and leading to traffic jams on the main road and flyovers due to submerged underpasses.
The drainage system in Chattogram proved inadequate to cope with the downpour, resulting in water entering many homes and establishments. Even prominent locations like the Bahaddarhat Swajon Super Market and Haque Market experienced inundation, leading to the closure of shops.
Challenges were faced by residents and traders alike. Residents struggled to carry out daily activities due to the submerged roads, while traders expressed concerns about potential business losses due to water entering their establishments.
The situation is further complicated by the city's proximity to the Bay of Bengal, leading to higher water levels during high tide, particularly affecting low-lying areas such as Agrabad, CDA residential area, Shanti Bagh residential, Chandgaon, Riaz Uddin Bazar, where water levels reached knee-deep on roads.
Both bdnews24.com and UNB reports mentioned that City Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury's house in Bahaddarhat was inundated with water along with the surrounding areas.
Assistant Meteorologist Suman Saha of Patenga Meteorological Office attributed the rainfall to low pressure.
He cautioned that the city may continue to experience more rain for another day or two, raising concerns about potential landslides in areas with heavy rainfall.
