Police have arrested a man who butchered his wife and took his own mother hostage for five hours in Chattogram.
The incident occurred on Monday in Syedabad village in Chattogram’s Chandanaish Upazila, reports bdnews24.com.
Police said Md Jamir Uddin Chowdhury killed his wife, 35-year-old Beauty Akhtar, on Monday afternoon. When neighbours came forward, he took his 90-year-old mother Shamsun Nahar hostage by putting a knife to her throat for five hours.
Jamir is a member of the Chandanaish Jubo League, police and locals say.
The mother was freed and Jamir was arrested and brought to the station around 10pm, according to Imran Al Hossein, chief of Chandanaish Police Station.
The OC said that Jamir killed his wife in their room. Shamsun Nahar rushed to the room when she heard her daughter-in-law’s screams. He then detained her by putting the knife to her throat. At one point, when locals attempted to apprehend him, he even hit his mother on the head with the knife.
OC Imran said that police went to the scene when the incident was reported. Jamir had locked the room and had his knife to his mother’s throat. They tried to get him to surrender before slyly unlocking the door and apprehending him.
The couple have two sons, one 14 and the other four months old.
Locals say that Jamir had, on occasion, spoken incoherently, Imran said.
The situation is being investigated, Imran added.
