Local residents have once again clashed with students of Chittagong University in the Gate No. 2 area.

Students say the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when locals attacked a group of students who had gone to 'rescue' another group of fellow students.

The university’s deputy vice chancellor and several other students have reportedly been injured in the incident, bdnews24.com reports.

After an overnight clash between the two groups, locals blocked the street again on Sunday morning. Students living in the area were trapped inside their homes.

Witnesses say that students began gathering in the area around 11:00 am in separate groups. When a number of students had gathered around noon, it led to a fresh clash. Deputy Vice Chancellor Kamal and members of the university administration went to the scene to try and calm the situation.

The deputy vice chancellor and several students were hit by brickbats at the scene.

A journalist at the scene said that clashes were breaking out between the two sides intermittently. Both sides were armed with sticks and rods. They took up positions across from each other and were pelting each other with brickbats.

The journalist said that he had taken refuge in a nearby store with several others amid the violence.

The students initially clashed with the residents of Jobra around 11:30 pm on Saturday.
