CUMILLA, Nov 17: At one time Cumilla Zoo and Botanical Garden was one of the most entertaining places for the local people.
The zoo, along with a botanical garden, was built on over 10 acres of land in 1985. Now the zoo and the botanical garden are in a bad condition.
Due to mismanagement, the number of visitors is decreasing gradually and the government is also losing revenue.
A good number of visitors complained that most of the cages in the zoo are empty. The botanical garden has been turned into a garbage dumping station. It suffers from water-logging throughout the year.
The zoo along with the botanical garden is situated on the DC Bungalow Road in Cumilla town. Comilla Zilla Parishad is responsible for the management of these two establishments. The zila parishad, however, maintains the zoo and the botanical garden through commercial lease.
Visitors said the present condition of the zoo and botanical garden is annoying.
One Abul Bashar Rana who visited the zoo said once the zoo had good reputation. The cages were filled with animals. People used to visit here along with family members.
Cumilla Zilla Parishad chief executive Mohammad Helal Uddin said the zoo and botanical garden would be renovated soon under a project.
