Customs sieze gold bars, arrest Civil Aviation staff

Customs Preventive team at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) detained three people, including an employee of Civil Aviation Authority Bangladesh (CAAB) in connection with recovery of 57 gold bars worth around Tk 33.2 million from the airport mosque on Sunday.

The arrestees are CAAB Cleaning Shift in-charge Md Jamal Uddin Patwari and two passengers - Ekramul Hoque and Jahidul Hoque Salman Bhuiyan, reports UNB.

Earlier, the two passengers landed at the airport by an aircraft of Emirates Airlines from Dubai in the morning.

Othello Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner of Customs (Preventive) told UNB that tipped off a special preventive team detained the CAAB employee along with the two passengers from the mosque, adjacent to air-lounge of Mutual Trust Bank in the same floor around 9 am as the two passengers were handing over a bag containing the gold consignment to Jamal Uddin.

Later, the three detained people were taken to Customs Lounge and 57 gold bars weighing around 6.63 kgs were recovered from inside cigarette packet, which was kept hidden inside the bag, Othello said.

Current market value of the recovered gold is around Tk 33.2 million, he said.

Legal action has been taken against the arrestees under Special Power Act.
