Cyclone threat looms as fresh low forms over Bay of Bengal

A low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which may intensify into a depression before potentially developing into a cyclone, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

In a special weather bulletin issued on Friday, the Met Office advised fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay of Bengal not to venture into the deep sea until further notice, bdnews24.com.

“The low may intensify into a depression or a cyclonic storm,” Meteorologist Omar Faruk told bdnews24.com around noon.

On whether the system could affect Bangladesh, he said: “Its current trajectory is towards Andhra Pradesh in India. Later, a portion of the system might move towards Bangladesh over land. As a result, there is a possibility of light, scattered rainfall in the western parts of the country around the 29th of October.”

In its regular morning bulletin on Friday, the BMD said that rain or thundershowers may occur at one or two places in the Chattogram and Sylhet divisions over the next 24 hours. Elsewhere, the weather is expected to remain largely dry with partly cloudy skies.

During this period, both day and nighttime temperatures across the country may fall slightly, the forecast added.

Over the last 24 hours, the country’s highest temperature was recorded in Feni at 36.2 degrees Celsius.

As usual, the lowest temperature was recorded in Panchagarh's Tetulia, where the mercury dropped to 20.1 degrees Celsius.
