Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) expressed their deep shock and condolence at the unexpected loss of 67 lives in the devastating fire incident in Chawkbazar on Wednesday night.

DCCI chief Osama Taseer, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the DCCI, came with the statement on Thursday.

He paid a visit to the affected area to express his unfathomable solidarity to the injured and to the members of the bereaved family.

DCCI Senior Vice President Waqar Ahmad Chodhury, Vice President Imran Ahmed, Directors Alhaj Deen Mohammed and Hossain A Sider, among others, were present during the visit.

Osama Taseer said this kind of catastrophic fire incident is not new to us.

"We have also experienced the same incident back in 2010 at Nimtoli of Old Dhaka. But adequate measures have not been taken after that tragic fire incident," he said.

He also mentioned that if we fail to come into a specific solution acceptable to all stake holders through discussions, this type of unpleasant happening may occur again.

The president said mere government’s effort is not enough but awareness among the concerned businessmen and mass people of that region is mostly important to bring about a permanent solution.

Since, chemical and its allied products are seriously combustible substances, therefore its handling, business and warehousing system should be maintained in a planned manner, he added.

Moreover, DCCI President urged the government to investigate this catastrophic fire incident immediately and take necessary measures.
