The government has instructed deputy commissioners to take measures to maintain peace and order at shrines across the country.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs came with the directive in a letter on Sunday in response to what it describes as planned attacks on shrines aimed at embarrassing the government.
The ministry noted that in the changed circumstances, some miscreants are attacking shrines in various parts of the country with the aim of disrupting law and order, which is alarming and undesirable.
Shrines, considered the resting places of saints and spiritual figures, have long been sites of devotion and reverence, it added.
