Mugda Hospital suspended admitting new patients, BSMMU to extend dengue beds

The government has reported 14 more deaths, including 10 from Dhaka in the mosquito-borne dengue fever while a record number of new cases were reported across the country.

With this, the total casualties stood at 215, including 172 from Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Besides, 2,653 new dengue patients were hospitalised in the last 24 hours ending this on Wednesday at 8:00 am throughout the country. Of the total, 1,327 were from Dhaka.

Meanwhile, the health authorities have suspended admitting dengue patients at the government Mugda Hospital in the city as dedicated beds for dengue are already filled up by patients.

Additional Director General of DGHS Prof. Dr. Ahmedul Kabir of the DGHS said this on Wednesday.

The health authorities have prepared 2,500 beds for the treatment of dengue patients, he said.

“There is no more opportunity to increase the beds in Mugda Hospital. The maximum limit has been crossed. Please inform everyone that people should not go to the hospital as there are no beds available for availing treatment,” he added.

Dr. Kabir said if everyone goes to one place then how will it be possible to provide treatment.

In Kurmitola Hospital, out of 250 beds, 60 beds are available; we have asked to increase another 100 beds. Dhaka Medical College Hospital has been asked to increase 150 more beds while Kuwait Maitri Hospital has been asked to add 100 more beds, he added.

“We are monitoring the situation in the hospital all the time, including to accommodate the patients in possible ways”, he continued.

Meanwhile, the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) authority is going to extend its dengue corner as the existing facilities have already been filled up by patients.

The additional will be added on Thursday in an official inauguration, according to the officials.

The total number of dengue cases rose to 40,341. Of the total cases, 23,676 were from Dhaka, added DGHS.

A total of 8,189 people were being treated across the country in hospitals. Of them, 4,760 were from Dhaka.

Of the total admitted, 31,937 patients made recovery and returned home, and of them, 18,744 were from Dhaka.

Last year, 281 people died due to dengue, the highest in the history of the country.
