Dengue patients rising in Joypurhat, Sirajganj, Bogura, Jhenidah districts

TANGAIL, Aug 08: A dengue-affected patient died at Kumodini Hospital under Mirzapur upazila in the district on Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified as Arif Hossaon Kajal (28), son of Alam Miah in Khoylo Shindur village of Warshi union under Mirzapur upazila. 

Sources said Kajal was admitted to the hospital with high fever. Later, he was diagnosed as dengue patient.

Director of Kumodini Hospital Dr Pradip Kumar Roy said he died around 10.00 pm.

A total of 104 dengue patients have been admitted to the hospital so far.

Our Roving Correspondent from Joypurhat adds: Dengue is breaking out alarmingly in Joypurhat, Sirajganj and Bogura districts of Rajshahi division.

Tk 0.2 million has been allocated to each of the district Sadar hospitals and upazila hospitals. Programmes have been taken to make people aware of the disease.

Recently, a good number of people have been appointed on temporary basis at the municipality offices in the three districts to stop spreading of dengue virus. They have been provided with special training on driving out the Aedes mosquitoes.

Besides, the Health Department laid emphasis on using lids on commodes and keeping the refrigerator trays dry.

All types of utensils should be kept upside down, the flower tubs or water trays should be left out and the lid of the water tank closed, the department added.

The number of dengue patients is rising fast in all the five upazilas of Joypurhat district.

Meanwhile, Sharmin Akhter, 25, pregnant for six months, wife of Meteorologist Nazmul Hossain died of dengue fever. She died while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka.

Civil surgeon Dr Sams Uddin said a total of 32 people have been affected with dengue fever and some eight are taking treatment in government and private hospitals. Dengue panic has gripped the common people across the region, he added.

In Sirajganj, the disease is also spreading fast. New patients are being admitted to the hospitals everyday.

Many patients are returning home after treatment. Some 204 dengue patients are identified and some 60 have been hospitalised in Sirajganj till now.

Despite the increase in the number of dengue patients, no awareness programme is being conducted in the district, alleged victims' family. The Health Department's activities are limited to a few view exchanges, rallies and a few banners.

Sirajganj Civil Surgeon Dr Zahidul Islam said every house, office, school, college, and court complex and government offices must be kept clean. Banner is being hung and awareness programe is conducted in schools.

In Bogura, dengue has created panic among the people. Many people have been diagnosed with dengue only when they felt feverish.

Meanwhile, private hospitals and clinics have available kits, but there is a shortage of dengue fever test kits in the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital.

Assistant director of the hospital, Abdul Wadud said, ' We are serving the patients who have been affected with dengue'. He further said that people of Bogura town and villages are rushing to the hospital whenever they are affected with fever.

District Civil Surgeon Gosul Azim Chowdhury said a total of 364 people have been identified as dengue patients across the district. Some 126 patients are taking treatment both in private hospitals and government hospitals.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Faiz Ahmed said dengue was being monitored keeping track record all the time. There are enough kits in the private hospitals for dengue testing.

Demand letter from Dhaka has been issued to address the Government Medical College's kit crisis. Within a few days, the kit will arrive in Bogura, added the DC.

Our Jhenidah Correspondent adds: Jhenidah Sadar Hospital is struggling with a large number of dengue patients. A total of 102 dengue patients were admitted here in last one month.

Recently the number of patients taking admission to the hospital has increased alarmingly. Some 25-30 dengue patients are being admitted here, on an average everyday.

Patients admitted to this hospital atre kept under mosquito nets. Special care of them is being taken. However, sometimes other patients are placed beside the dengue patients and all the wards of the hospital are filled with patients.

There are more than 1,000 various patients admitted to the hospital.

According to the hospital sources, most of the patients who took admission started suffering from dengue fever while they were in Dhaka on different purposes. However, patients locally affected with dengue germs are also coming here.

Patients who were diagnosed with dengue fever at different private clinics in the town were also sent to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital.

Most of the dengue patients are male. Five children with dengue fever were also admitted here.

The department concerned said six dengue patients in critical condition were referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Faridpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Superintendent of Jhenidah Sadar hospital Dr Ayub Ali told the FE that they were treating dengue patients free of cost. He added that dengue detection kits for indoor patients were available in the hospital.

Patients from Jhenidah municipality, Sadar and other upazilas were admitted to the hospital, he added.

Rubel Hossain (21), an employee of Radiant Pharmaceutical limited was suffering from dengue fever at his work place at Mirpur Section One in Dhaka. He was admitted to the hospital with five days' fever.

Sharmin Akhter Lima, mother of a dengue patient Tafsi (3) told that her son was suffering from dengue fever at Kaliganj upazila headquarter six days ago. After coming to the Sadar hospital, dengue germ was detected in his blood.

All types of services related to dengue patients were being given free of cost in the hospital.
