A devastating fire has erupted after a massive explosion at the chemical godown of a dyeing factory in Narauanganj's Fatulla.

The incident took place at Bombay Dyeing Factory at Pagla Islamia Boubazar around 6 in the morning today, fire service officials say.

No casualties resulted from the incident, but surrounding houses and businesses, including a four-storey building that houses the factory, were seriously damaged, they say.

Witnesses say they woke up to an ear-splitting explosion early in the morning, looked out and found within a matter of minutes that the fire had engulfed the factory and its smoke covered the surrounding area within a matter of minutes.

Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence's Deputy Director Abdullah Al Arefin say seven of their units doused the fire after around an hour of frantic efforts.

He could confirm neither the cause of the devastating incident nor the extent of losses caused by it immediately, local media reports say.

Though the fire service official, quoting the witnesses, say the explosion took place on the second floor of the factory building, where the chemical godown is, he declined to attribute the post-explosion fire to the chemical.

The exact cause of the fire cannot be confirmed unless an investigation is done with it, he said.

Narayanganj is a district, near of which is the capital city of Dhaka that has witnessed a chemical-fuelled fire recently claiming more than 70 lives in late February.
