The Dhaka-Chattogram four-lane highway will be upgraded to a 10-lane road for smooth traffic.
Meanwhile, the government has revised a plan to upgrade the highway to a 10-lane one at a cost of Tk 732 billion.
Earlier, they had planned to turn the highway into an eight-lane road.
Official sources said the detailed project proposal (DPP) is expected to be finalised by June next.
Officials at the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) said the detailed design of the 10-lane Dhaka-Chattogram highway is expected to be completed by this year.
The upgradation work on the highway is expected to begin in June next year. Now, the RHD is working to upgrade the road to a 10-lane one.
Md Sabbir Hasan Khan, director of the project and additional chief engineer of the RHD, said the upgradation work on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway is likely to begin in June 2026.
The Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC) began preparing feasibility study in April 2023 and is expected to submit a draft report in June 2025.
Sources said a total of five foreign and local companies are working on finalising the project design considering the traffic pressure and constraint of land.
RHD sources said the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the World Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and other donor agencies will finance the project.
This year, the authorities concerned would float tenders and complete DPP, they added.
