Consumers to get mangoes and jackfruits year-round, says agriculture secretary

Agriculture Secretary Wahida Akter on Saturday announced that people will be able to enjoy mangoes and jackfruits year-round as the government continues to introduce new varieties of fruits and other agricultural crops in the country.
“The government has been working sincerely to ensure food security as well as an ample supply of fruits,” she stated.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) Fruits Festival 2024 as the chief guest, Wahida Akter said that Bangladesh requires around five million prices eggs and approximately 0.1 million tonnes of rice daily.
She said that Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in rice production. “Fruit production will also be sufficient in the coming years. Within the next five years, mangoes and jackfruits will be available 365 days a year,” she added.
Commending the honesty and bravery of journalists in fulfilling their professional duties, Wahida Akter emphasised that media personalities should play a more responsible role in reporting news related to the agriculture.
“Journalists always provide constructive criticism and fact-based news. They should play a greater role in the development of agriculture to help move the country forward,” she said.
The event, chaired by DRU President Syed Shukur Ali Shuvo, was also addressed by Dr Md Mehedi Masood, Project Director of the Year-Round Fruit Production for Nutritional Improvement Project; Project Director of the Exportable Mango Production Mohammad Arifur Rahman, as special guests.
A total of 19 varieties of fruits were available for DRU members and guests at the festival.
