Dhaka sees 80 mm of rain in three hours

Dhaka residents woke to the drumming of rain as a heavy shower that started on Monday night continued into Tuesday morning and submerged nearly all the roads of the capital.

Dhaka saw 80 mm of rain in the three hours from 6:00 am to 9:00 am on Tuesday, according to meteorologist Omar Faruq.

The heavy downpour submerged all the streets and alleyways of the capital.

Commuters and school children struggled to make it to their destinations on time as the rain waterlogged several areas of the city, including Mirpur, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Pallabi, Jigatala, Banani, and Dhanmondi Road 27.

At 11am, Faruq told bdnews24.com: “Dhaka will not see more rain for the moment, but it may rain later. It will rain in the Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions now.”

According to the regular weather bulletin issued by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Rangpur, Mymenmsingh, Chattogram, Sylhet, and some areas of Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal may experience light to moderate rainfall with gusty winds in the next 24 hours from 9am on Tuesday.

There may also be moderate to heavy rainfall in some parts of the country.

Cumilla recorded the highest rainfall in the country – 60 mm – in the 24 hours to 6am on Tuesday morning.

Bandarban recorded 25 mm of rain, Barishal 23 mm, Chattogram 21 mm and Chattogram’s Ambagan saw 21 mm.

Generally, 1-10 mm of rain a day is considered light rain, 11-22 mm is moderate, 23-44 mm is moderately heavy, 44-88 mm is heavy, and over 88 mm is very heavy.
