The Dhaka University (DU) observed the National Flag Hoisting Day on Monday, marking the historic occasion with due solemnity and respect.
The programme began in the morning with the hoisting of the national flag of independent Bangladesh in front of the university's Arts Building. A commemorative discussion was later held at the historic Bottola adjacent to the building.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, the two Pro-Vice Chancellors, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, along with teachers and students, attended the programme.
Addressing the gathering, VC said the national flag is not merely a piece of cloth; rather, it embodies the identity of the nation and stands as a symbol of unity. He emphasised the flag represents a glorious chapter in the country's history and serves as a powerful reminder of collective solidarity.
"The dignity, significance, and history of the national flag must be known to every citizen," he added.
ASM Abdur Rab, who hoisted the national flag of independent Bangladesh in 1971, was invited as a guest at the programme. However, the university administration informed that he was unable to attend due to illness.
