Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir on Monday said diplomatic efforts are underway to bring back the suspects in the murder of former Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Police Headquarters Media Centre, the newly appointed IGP said the authorities are working through diplomatic channels to return the accused, Faisal and Alamgir, to Bangladesh soon, as per local media reports.

He also said the police have prepared a list of terrorists and plan to launch a nationwide crackdown shortly to take effective action against terrorists and extortionists.

Referring to the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, the IGP said security on highways will be strengthened to ensure safe travel for holidaymakers.

“No incidents of mugging, robbery or extortion will be allowed on highways during the Eid journey,” he said, adding that law enforcement agencies will remain on high alert to ensure passenger safety.

On labour unrest over wages and benefits, the IGP said discussions have been held with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) to avoid any untoward situation.

He also said law enforcement agencies remain vigilant to prevent any resurgence of militancy.

Regarding the repatriation of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and the accused in the Hadi murder case, he said the matter is being handled through diplomatic channels in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The IGP also acknowledged that a small number of police personnel are responsible for the force’s negative image, stressing that there will be no favouritism in promotions or postings.

“Honest and competent people will remain in the police. It is better to have an empty cowshed than a bad cow,” he said.

He further said the government is considering appointing a judicial magistrate at every police station to ensure quicker resolution of cases. The government will also decide on any changes to police uniforms.
