Diplomats, political leaders, businesspeople and other dignitaries Thursday signed the condolence book opened at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan office as tributes to the late political matriarch abound.

It was the third and final day of signing the condolence book and thus mourning the demise of the three-time prime minister and uncompromising political leader-BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

In the morning, a large crowd of party leaders, activists and journalists was seen outside the chairperson's office.

Those who came to sign the condolence book were allowed in the office following a set procedure.

Party leaders and activists were also present along both sides of the nearby roads.

Among those who signed the condolence book were US Chargé d'Affaires in Dhaka Tracy Ann Jacobson, Iranian Ambassador Mansour Chavoshi, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner, and a representative of the Aga Khan Foundation.

They paid deep respects to Begum Khaleda Zia and expressed sympathy to her bereaved family, a day after the leader was laid to rest following a hugely attended state funeral.

Others who signed the condolence book included Social Welfare Adviser of the interim government Sharmeen S Murshid, President of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Bangladesh Mahbubur Rahman, apparel industrialist and politician A K Azad, and heads of various organisations.

Jatiya Party Secretary-General Shamim Haider Patwari paid his respects. Religious leaders also joined, including Pir of Charsina Darbar Sharif Hazrat Maulana Mufti Shah Abu Nasr Nesaruddin Ahmed.

In the evening, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman visited the office to pay tribute.

Begum Khaleda Zia passed away early Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital. Her funeral prayers were held Wednesday on the parliament premises.

She was later buried with state honours beside the grave of her husband, martyred President Ziaur Rahman.

With the signing of the condolence book on Thursday, this phase of the official mourning comes to an end.
