At least seven people, including former social welfare minister Dipu Moni, have been arrested in the Ramizuddin murder case filed with Tejgaon Police Station.
Other arrestees accused in the case are Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President Hasanul Haq Inu, Bangladesh Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, former ICT state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former IGP Abdullah Al Mamun, former news editor at Ekattor TV Shakil Ahmed and former chief reporter Farzana Rupa.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saddam Hossain granted the police petition after hearing it on Sunday.
On Sept 17, Inspector Sihel Rana of Tejgaon Police Station petitioned to show the seven arrested in the Ramizuddin murder case. The suspects were not presented to the court on that day so the court fixed Sept 22 for the hearing.
They were brought to the court on Sunday morning and the judge issued the order showing them arrested. Lawyer Morshed Hossain Shaheen appealed for the suspects’ bail.
“They are former MPs and ministers, journalists, and an ex-police official. They have been framed in the case only for harassment. They have no clue about the incident,” Shaheen told the court.
“They are shown arrested in different cases and have been remanded multiple times for interrogation. This will break people’s trust in the judiciary. Arresting them and taking them into remand repeatedly is against human rights.”
“There are two women among them, and Rashed Khan Menon and Inu are senior citizens. It’s not logical to harass them. They will not flee when granted bail. I appeal for their bail under any condition.”
The state counsels opposed the bail plea. The court heard both and turned down the bail plea, ordering to send the suspects to jail.
Ramizuddin Ahmed was shot dead on Aug 4 in Tejgaon amid the violence around the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. Ramizuddin’s father AKM Rakibul Hasan filed a case on Sept 7 naming 223 suspects, including Sheikh Hasina.
